Camtasia Editing Hot Key Shortcuts

Keyboard short-cuts (or hotkeys) have been around forever in the mouse-moving. pointing & clicking world of Windows as a way to avoid constantly traversing the screen to get software to do what you want.

Buttons, menus, links…all the things that made a graphical user interface popular in the first place get a little tedious when you become a “power user”. While I’m a fan of SIMPLE keyboard shortcuts, I don’t go all ninja with 3 key combinations. CTRL-SHIFT-F2 or whatever is just too much for my brain BUT:

In Camtasia, there are several time saving hotkey tools that are very simple to use!

Some of my favorites are CTRL-S to Save (I use this a LOT), the “M” key to drop Markers, “S” to Split just to name a few.

Here are a couple that are specific to the features in the Camtasia Canvas that most people don’t know about but that can quickly and easily (as in NO button clicking) let you Pan and Crop the content on your timeline:

Pan Tool Quick Tip: Use the Space Bar!

Crop Tool Quick Tip: Use the Control Key!

The handy thing to note about both of these shortcuts is that they eliminate the confusion that can occur when you click either of the tool buttons in the Camtasia interface to perform a Pan or Crop and then forget to UNCHECK them. 😉

Welcome to the world of Camtasia Power Users.

Great tip! I never even noticed that Pan button before. I’ve been zooming out to do animations. Very handy. And even better with the Spacebar.

    Thanks Robin! I should clarify:

Using the Pan tool in the Canvas preview area does NOT actually do any editing of the clip on the timeline. It only changes your “view” of the Canvas work area. It does not perform a “pan” like using a zoom animation on the timeline would.

    Does that make sense?

The Crop tool however does indeed change the properties of the element on the timeline being cropped (i.e. is IS an edit).

    Sorry for any confusion!
