Adventures in Greenscreen- the Saga Continues

I’m getting pretty excited about mastering this new “Remove a Color” feature in Camtasia 8.1 so the green screen saga continues in my quest to create a services video for my other site which is Screencast Video Services . I just want to do a video where I walk on from the side similar to the way the video below is done.

In a recent newsletter I mentioned that I had ordered some green muslin off Amazon so that I could experiment a bit with the chromakey (remove a color) feature, which is new in Camtasia 8.1.  I’ve been doing screencast video for many years but I don’t have much experience with full motion camera video so I thought I would give it a try.  I am using a script template I found on the BrainyVideo.com site (which is awesome BTW) and then I found his (Steve Washer’s) course on GreenScreen which I have just started to watch.

Last week I purchased a phone adapter so my Galaxy Note 2 (which is super big- if you’ve never seen one) could attach to my  tripod.  I think it gets much better picture quality than my webcam.  Next, I ordered a stand to hold the green muslin fabric. Lon also suggested a lavalier mic (which I haven’t ordered yet but intend to). I need it because I’m going for a long shot and I’ll be too far away from phone mic to get decent sound.

I hadn’t gotten into the part in the Greenscreen course about lighting the green fabric so I didn’t have any lighting on it at all when I did my first test.

In this video (taken from one of our weekly coaching sessions)the students, and Lon Naylor, give me greenscreen lighting tips. Which is very kind of them because it is me that usually doles out all the advice when I lead one of those sessions.

It’s fun going through this process from scratch and seeing how I can create something completely different than I have ever done before.  In my next post I’ll have the finished video with some more of my missteps thrown in so YOU don’t make them yourself.

Best,

Michelle Schoen

looking forward to seeing you master this Michelle. I ordered a green screen kit with the wrong lights and sent it back after getting frustrated. I just recently ordered a new green screen with video a video lighting kit. I’m so hoping this works this time lol… I’ll share my results with you too in the group 🙂

Very interesting video Michelle..I am in pretty much the same place as you with all this techie stuff..I liked Lon’s comments as you were talking. A while back after taking a two month course at the local Tech I bought a Lavaliere and it didn’t seem to work with my Camcorder. Lon explained that often you need an adapter with this if you are using a new style camera phone.
Great show by the way..got to keep at it to reach the level that is both inexpensive but Professional.

I’ve been doing my own experimentation with green screen, so it’s cool to watch you going through the process Michelle. Looking forward to more of your progress. I like the idea of full body that you talked about (or at least half body) — as a flexible alternative to just talking head. 🙂

Hey guys- Thank you for all your input. I also got a nice link from one of our students, Michael Krisa, to a wireless lavalier mic just in case the wired one won’t work with my phone. He says

“If you want a wireless mic or anything related to video + mobile check out http://HDHat.com

Today I’ll be working on my ability to read the script from 6 feet away from my computer using the free teleprompter at http://www.cueprompter.com/

Wish me luck!
