Five Steps to Create Your First Online Video Training Course
The world today is a very visual one. People have always loved watching videos, with an estimate of around 5 hours a day spent every day(by an adult!) – just watching videos. People who have been creating online courses for years have picked up on this trend and have begun creating much more video based courses. The main reason for video’s popularity as a learning tool is its ability to engage, while accommodating varying learning styles.
With online video training only getting more and more prolific, selling your expertise in an eLearning format has become a viable business opportunity for a lot of people who want to leave the 9-5 behind and have a more flexible lifestyle.
So many people come here to the LearnCamtasia.com site to get technical information about creating video courses and tutorials with Camtasia or PowerPoint but they don’t really know the main phases of how someone goes from getting an idea for a course to selling it.
So, below I’ve listed the five main steps you can take to get your first video training course online. And if you want to learn more about the opportunities in creating paid online video training we’d love to have you attend our new webinar.

STEP 1: Do a Brainstorming Session to Find a Profitable Idea that will work for video
Online video courses are fast to develop and have high value to students (customers). Look into your experiences and find a compelling transformation you’ve been through or a topic that you know very well. Whether you have too many or only a few ideas, your exact topic matters less than you think while you’re still in brain storming mode. Try doing a Google search to see if there are other video courses on your topic. If there aren’t it may not be a topic that is in much demand.
STEP 2: Review other Professional Video courses
Take a look at sites like Udemy, Skillshare and Craftsy to see what other people are doing with their video training courses. Generally, these sites have a certain level of minimum requirements such as clear audio, a trailer, clear engaging images, etc. (which just make them more professional looking). You can also see what is selling and popular.
STEP 3: Record Your Content (The Easy Way)
Create an outline with Modules, Lesson and Topics. Many people also create a Storyboard to gather all the details of what they will say and show on each screen. You can use a tool like Keynote or PowerPoint to design your slides and record your narration along with it. There are PowerPoint templates available that can make it easier to design and organize your content quickly. We’ll be talking about these on the webinar.
STEP 4: Upload your Video Training Course
Content can actually be uploaded to YouTube for free (with the content set to private or unlisted) Some people will prefer to upload to their own web servers or Amazon S3 to have complete control over the content. But, once your video content has been uploaded you will want to put it on a page that can only be accessed by paying customers. Lon and I use membership site software to keep our course pages hidden.
Step 5: LAUNCH your paid course
If you don’t already have an audience, now is the best time to start. One way is to find online communities where people are asking questions about your topic and contribute valuable, shareable content with a link back to your website. My favorite way to get buyers, though, is to partner with someone who has a similar audience to you and would be willing to introduce your course to their readers. Give your partner some free content to give away or deliver a webinar to their audience. Later you can offer your course at a discounted rate or for a limited time.
Are you already working these steps into your video training course strategy? Consider the approach you will use to create your video training, the skills you need to develop, and the technology that will support you.
