Bi-Weekly Video Update – 08/14/18
Hey there, it’s Michelle this week and I’ve decided to devote this week’s newsletter to current and prospective Camtasia Freelancers. Learn about strategies to find work, how to price work and some questions you can ask your clients once you get the work.

How many organizations do you know that operate with absolutely no strategy, and just hope that everything works out? Not many successful ones, that’s for sure. If you are a Camtasia freelancer, you are your own organization and you should have a detailed plan that identifies how you will attract and retain new business and capture new opportunities. At least a few times a year, check how you’re doing against your strategy and adjust wherever necessary…
How to Calculate the Cost of Development
Every video training course is unique and if you have to give your clients a set price it can be pretty difficult. I did, however, find a forum thread that has some really good thoughts on this subject. Although it’s a rather old thread the prices really haven’t gone up much since it was created.
Some Questions to Help You in Your First Meeting with a Client
Once you’ve been hired as a contractor you’ll usually have a kickoff meeting with your client. Here is just a sampling of the questions you may want to ask. These will help you determine the cost and the timeline for the training.
- Where is the final learning product to be launched? (LMS, smart phones, iPad, etc.)
- How much of the content already exists (i.e., is written down somewhere)?
- How many SMEs will be involved, and how accessible will they be? (Warn that slow SMEs can grind projects to a halt)
- How much learner interactivity would be appropriate, given the topics we’ve discussed?
- Do you have an existing stylesheet of company branding colors or fonts you’d like me to use?
- Is there an existing image or video library?
- Would shooting unique images or video be appropriate?
- Who would you like to use for voiceover narration? (Explain pros and cons of using a professional)
- What do you feel would be a good length for each Module? (explain that most e-learning Modules are 20-40 minutes or so)
- Do you want to formally assess the learner’s knowledge by scoring knowledge checks/quiz questions?
- Are there some Training Videos you have seen that you especially like? What do you like about them?
- Is there a hard deadline for the project?
