Create a 3D “Pop Out” Effect in Camtasia

A lot of times (especially when we demo software), we want to zoom into a particular part of a Camtasia recording to show greater detail of what we are doing.

Normally, that’s fine. Show the detail…and zoom back out.

Well, sometimes that is a problem when you want to zoom in BUT…still be able to see what’s happening on the rest of the screen!

Here’s a little trick you can do that will “pop out” a section of your recording and make it bigger and still show the “lay of the land” of the big picture:

The secret sauce for this special method is that instead of just adding a Scale animation to pop the detail copy out and then add another animation to zoom it back into place is that by using blank Keyframes at each end of the clip and then just changing the middle part (to pop out), when the second keyframe hits, the pop out will return to it’s exact original position!

Pretty sweet. eh?

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  1. My sample clip did not have any audio narration. If you copy / paste a clip with narration? You will want to Separate Audio & Video from the top clip and delete the second audio track copy…
  2. If you just want to grab a section of a long screen capture recording, make a Selection with the playhead of that portion (i.e. the part you want to “pop out”), right-click, copy and paste as your top clip…

Plus, you can get creative and use this effect for all kinds of things like popping a section of a website recording out, social media page, or anywhere you want really. Just don’t over use it! 😉
