Quick Guide to Video Training Summaries

Although most good training designers follow a basic formula for creating their video course, one of the things I see most often left out of otherwise well structured courses is the Summary/Transition slide.

In my last blogpost on Attention Grabbing Openers, I went over some of the best ways to get your viewer’s attention when you start off your video. In this week’s post I’ll talk about wrapping up your video and how you can smoothly transition students to the next Lesson in your video course.

When you are developing a multi-Lesson Video course it is tempting to simply share the content in each lesson then end the video, but in order for your student to retain the info they just learned, a good summary will tie the most important content together for them. If there are specific strategies and tips you need to reiterate, this is the place to remind them. And lastly, adult learners all like to be told what is coming next so don’t forget to add a nice transition sentence as to the objective of your next Lesson.

If you’re wondering how this would look in a real course, below are two sample scripts you can use as models for your own course.

1. Sample Script for Summary/Transition

Congratulations! You’re at the end of the very first section of this course — well on your way to creating your first Kindle book. In this Lesson we started out introducing you to a few key concepts about writing for Kindle. Then, we went over how to be sure your topic would be popular and the structure of your outline. Don’t forget to use the keyword tool and topic selector guide which can be found in the Resources link. That’s it for Lesson 1. In the next Lesson, we’ll cover the 4 key elements of a highly successful first chapter. See you there!

2. Sample Script for Summary/Transition

The section you’ve just completed is the real heart of this course — creating your marketing plan.
We know that sometimes it can be hard creating a new plan but again, would just like to reiterate that we are here, to help you, and that there are tons of resources at your disposal in the document category.  In this lesson, we focused on all aspects of  marketing — we really got into the nitty gritty of SEO, Social Media , and Google Adwords.. We also went over how to create a keyword list with the Google Keyword Too. Now that you have mastered these techniques, get ready to learn how your blogposts can be found more easily on Google Searches.

For every section of your video course, create a conclusion screen where you go over what you covered and highlight some of the key takeaways. Then tell the student what they will learn next…. Summaries/Transitions are a great tactic to employ in your own video courses — conclusions help to direct students’ attention to your most important points and the transition helps set them up to focus on what is coming next.
